How To Increase The Performance Of Your CD & DVD Drives

Are you still running Windows 98, or Windows ME? If you are keep reading? If your not keep reading anyway. Supplemental cache size, ever heard of it? Well according to Microsoft “The supplemental cache is used to hold path table, directory, and file information. It is a passive cache holding data that has been accessed and may be accessed again.” In simpler words the supplemental cache is memory in your computer that Windows takes with out asking and is available to supplement the built cache that is inside your CD drive. The attempt is to make it as smooth as painlessly as possible when your drive is read or writing to a CD. However if you have a newer CD drive they tend to performance better than older CD drives, because of the improved performance of the drives caching.

Optimizing the access patterns, this basically tells Windows at which speed you want it to read and write data, like you would want it to read at a lower speed. Seriously you can try different speeds to find which of the setting work best with your CD drive. Generally speaking though, you can ramp up the setting to match the maximum speed that your CD drive is rated at. However be careful increasing the setting will not always give you the best performance.

Ok let’s go, remember this is only for Windows 98 and ME, for Widows XP and above it’s a little different.

  1. On your Desk Top right click the My Computer icon and click properties.
  2. Over to the left you will se the Performance Tab, click on it.
  3. At the bottom of that window right below Advanced Settings click on Files System.
  4. Now a new window will appear, click on the CD-ROM Tab.
  5. Click and hold down and drag the Supplemental Cache slider all the way to the right.
  6. Click Ok to close that window, then click ok again to close the System Properties window.

Now go and test your performance!
