As the rise of inkjet printers comes, so does that of laser printers. Most people who print a majority of black and white find that laser printers are more economical. The printer is quicker, can handle a larger work load and the toner cartridges last through thousands of pages versus the hundreds that inkjet printers will last with the cost being roughly the same (if you include both black and color cartridges for the inkjet). Eventually the toner will run out though, and from where what does one do to recycle their toner cartridges?

While just tossing out the toner and purchasing another is what most people do, given the 350 million cartridges that are disposed into a landfill every year, there are several other more economical, eco-friendly, and interesting ways to recycle toner cartridges. The first option is to sell the cartridge for cold, hard cash. There are retailers out there, from local establishments to companies that function through the web, which will buy back empty cartridges (and most of them specify they can’t have a history of being refilled) and send you money for them. Each cartridge has a different buy back amount, so in order to see how much yours is worth you’ll have to do some research. However, the average we’re found is between $5 and $10 a piece. That’s not too much considering toners run around $70. Also places like Staples and Office Depot offer $3 or more for every toner cartridge returned to them, which is money that can be used to buy yourself a new one.

Also there is the option of just donating in order to recycle your toner cartridges. There are many charities out in the world who have tapped into the wise movement of turning trash into cash and helping out those in need. Recycle 4 Charity is one, ActionAid Recycling is another, and even Easy Recycling in Europe. Giving to charity is a worldwide epidemic thankfully. By donating your empty toner cartridges to one of these charities, you’re ensuring that the cartridge isn’t filling up our landfills and doing your service to mankind. Bravo dear reader.

A third option is to get the toner cartridge refilled. By using this method to recycle your toner cartridges, you are going to save yourself some bucks by getting a discount at the refill company and by saving the world from unnecessary trash. Again, Bravo for you. Refilling a toner cartridge can be tricky though and should not be done at home. Go out and find a reputable refill company and have them do the work. They can ensure that the toner cartridge isn’t going to break and ruin your computer, plus it says you from being covered head to toe in chemical substances from not knowing what you’re doing. Pull out the local yellow pages and call around to find out about prices, services, wait time, and even if they are familiar with their customer satisfaction ratio.
